The world of John Wick keeps getting more formidable. Via Deadline, Hiroyuki Sanada has joined the cast director Chad Stahelski’s upcoming John Wick 4. Sanada has had quite a year already, starring in Mortal Kombat and Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. Now, the 60-year-old Japanese actor will join (or fight?) Keanu Reeves in the latest Wick venture.
Sanada’s career spans large and small. He may be best known to some for recent turns in major comic book movies like Avengers: Endgame and The Wolverine. But his film acting career dates back to the 1960s, and includes work under Japanese directors including Masahiro Makino, Teruo Ishii, Kinji Fukasaku, and more.

In 2002, he starred in Yoji Yamada’s The Twilight Samurai. Around the same time, he established himself as a tour de force onstage in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of King Lear. Notably, Sanada also costarred in the Wachowskis’ Speed Racer. More recently, among the aforementioned features, Sanada enjoyed a recurring role on HBO’s science fiction series Westworld.
Earlier this month, legendary actor Donnie Yen joined the cast. Yen will play an old friend of John Wick’s. And the two share a long history, and many similar enemies. So, sounds to us like Yen is another deadly assassin type. Possibly one who gave up that life, similar to how John Wick did. Also in the cast is recording artist Rina Sawayama, making her film debut, and Shamier Anderson, best known for his role on Wynonna Earp. We learned on August 9 via Deadline that Clancy Brown has also joined the cast; we don’t know who he’ll be portraying.
John Wick 4 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 27, 2022. A fifth chapter is filming back-to-back with part four.
